KNOXVILLE -  President Obama is putting the finishing touches on his fifth State of the Union address. It is a speech that is expected to bring a number of legislative incentives- with many centering on job growth.

The President will began traveling across the country in the days following the speech, speaking on the initiatives that will be Tuesday's address.

One of the places the President will visit is Nashville.

That prompted an interesting question: what do East Tennesseans think about our current state of the union?

6 News took that question to people on Market Square.

Herbert Tamer said it's much the same as it was six years ago: not good.

"I'm a certified public accountant and I see a lot of tax returns that haven't changed in six years," Tamer said.

6 News ran into former Knoxville City Councilman Rob Frost on Market Square.

"It depends on who you ask," Frost said. In terms of the economy I feel things could certainly be better. Things are still slow. Too many people have been negatively affected by the economic downturn. On the other hand, if you look at things like the stock market. The stock market's been doing well."

Not everyone we ran into was so pessimistic about the future.

"It's an unstable time, but I'm looking forward to it," said Loy Velazquez. "I have so much hope."
