ATHENS (WATE) - The McMinn County Sheriff's Department is looking for the people responsible for illegally dumping an estimated 1,000 tires over the weekend.

McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says the dump comes after the state recently raised tire disposal fees.

Sheriff Guy says that those fees have sometimes resulted in this type of behavior from less than reputable dealers.

"It's a hardship for the farmer, for the land owner to come out there and find a lot of tires piled up on their property," Sheriff Guy said. "It does tax our resources of litter crews who we'd rather be picking up roadside trash."

Anyone with information about the culprits is urged to call Sheriff Guy at 423-462-1230.

The department also says that anyone who notices a truck filled more than it normally should with tires, especially down a back road, should contact the authorities.
