GATLINBURG (WATE) –  Kids around East Tennessee traded in their backpacks for snowboards today,  as another snow day from school meant a day on the slopes of Ober Gatlinburg.

"We come up here every snow day, we got out yesterday at 10 a.m., so we came up here yesterday too," said Shelby McCroskey, a freshman at Northview Academy in Sevier County.

The combination of no school and fresh snow meant a busy day on the mountain.

"We've got a great customer response as you can see, somehow they weren't able to get to school but they were able to get up to Ober to ski and snow board," said John Cossaboon, director of skiing at Ober Gatlinburg.

The Davis' drove up Wednesday from Maryville. A snow day for the kids turned into a day of family fun.

"It was a beautiful day out so we decided we needed a good family day so we took the day off to come up here with some friends of ours," said Susanne Davis.

They were welcomed by a mountain of natural snow.

"We got six inches of new natural snow last night," said Cossaboon. "It's fantastic, I was out skiing on it yesterday. Nothing is better advertisement than snow."

With as much cold weather and snow we've had this year, Cossaboon says it looks like they're going to have one of the best seasons they've had in years.

"The winter of 2009-2010 we skied 100 days, our 100th day this year will be March 9th, and I think we'll surpass that so its going to end up being a great season," he explained.

This is the first time in several years Ober has been 100 percent open, meaning every lift and slope is operational.

That's good news for these teens, who have another snow day tomorrow, and plan to be back again.

"We're here all the time, they know us here now," said McCroskey. "We've already used up most of our snow days this year, I think we only have four left."
