KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A local charity put out the call for help and you answered. Mobile Meals had to cancel deliveries Wednesday because of the weather. Thursday, they needed people with four-wheel drives to help complete the routes.

"We heard they were looking for people to deliver meals with four-wheel drive," said Robin and Larry Collins.

Both retired, they answered the call.

"This is something my husband thought about last night. He couldn't go to bed thinking that there possibly were people out there needing food and here we were with a warm home and all of our food," Robin said.

Every day, Monday through Friday, Mobile Meals prepares and packages 800 hot meals. Then they're packed up and delivered by 60 to 80 volunteers to homebound seniors all across Knox County.

"As usual, Knox Countians stepped up. People who've never delivered, but they're not afraid to drive out in this or they have four-wheel drive, came out. I can't thank everybody enough," said Mobile Meals Director Alison Taylor.

She says the daily contact is just as important as the food, especially this time of year.

"It's cold. We make sure these people have heat," Taylor said. "We make sure they haven't fallen during the night."

Frances Barrett, 80, has been receiving Mobile Meals for the last four years.

"The food is delicious," Barrett said. "The people are great. Love it, love it."

Knox County Mobile Meals will need help again Friday morning from volunteers with four-wheel drives. If you would like to help, call (865) 524-2786. You may have to leave a message.
