KNOXVILLE (WATE) – From talking
to people around town Friday, you would think it was only yesterday when Peyton
Manning lived here.
People told 6 news his legacy
goes strong because of all the things he still does for East Tennessee.
"Everyone knows who Peyton
is," said Connor Rosenbaum, a UT student. "He's a legend around campus. I think all of
Knoxville are Broncos fans because of Peyton Manning."
Another UT student, named
Joe Daniels-Mulholland, echoed that sentiment. "I love Peyton Manning. I wasn't here when he
played, but I watched him when he did and I just love his personality on and
off the field."
"Peyton Manning is probably
the best ambassador that East Tennessee has and probably will have for quite
some time," said Rick Laney, who runs a Knoxville-based marketing firm. "It's
been years since he played football here and he still represents the community.
Obviously this community loves him. Peyton can do no wrong in the eyes of East
Manning's charity, the
Peyback Foundation, helps at-risk children in Tennessee and other states. He
comes back to Knoxville every year to give away two UT scholarships from his
"Peyton is a little different
than a lot of folks," said Laney. "When you have a lot of money, it's easy to
just write out a check and say here I'm doing something. Peyton decided that he
was going to roll up his sleeve and be involved in the day-to-day activities
and the actual administration of the Peyback administration."
Manning is also a spokesman
for Tennova Health and plays in an East Tennessee charity golf tournament every
Manning will play his third
Super Bowl on Sunday, his first with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos face the
Seattle Seahawks at 6:30 p.m.
"I'm guessing that Knoxville
has a huge number of Broncos fans, especially this weekend," said Laney.
