Person killed in Sewell Bridge crash identified

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The person killed in the Sewell Bridge crash has been identified as 31-year-old Rafael Rentas Rivera of Richlands.

According to a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Department of Public Safety, a 30-ton capacity crane was needed to remove the vehicle from the New River onto the bridge.

No cause of the crash has been identified.

One person is dead after a single vehicle crash on the Sewell Bridge in Jacksonville on Saturday.

According to a spokesperson for Jacksonville Department of Safety, the vehicle left the roadway and landed in the New River below the bridge.

As of 3:50 p.m. Saturday the bypass is reopen to traffic.

Jacksonville Police Chief Mike Yaniero says this is an active and open investigation.

Police and Fire and Emergency Services are on the scene of a single vehicle crash on the Sewell Bridge in Jacksonville.

Officials say the vehicle left the roadway, landing in the New River below.

East bound traffic on Highway 24 is down to one lane as first responders from the City, Onslow County and Camp Lejeune work at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.
