KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County teacher and coach has been charged with public intoxication.

According to a court affidavit, an officer was called to an apartment building on Adenleigh Way Sunday morning around 1:20 a.m. for both a public drunkenness call and a breaking and entering call. A citizen reported a man was trying to get into various apartments.

A Knox County Sheriff's Office deputy says he found Joseph Michalski, 30, near one of the apartments in the stairwell. The officer says Michalski had a strong smell of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet, and had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.

Michalski reportedly told officers he was trying to get home but was unable to tell them where he lived.

Officers determined he was intoxicated and a danger to himself. They then placed him into custody.

The assistant principal at Hardin Valley Academy confirms Michalski works at the school.

According to his profile on the school's website, he's a math teacher and is associated with the HVA baseball program.

A Knox County Schools spokesperson says Michalski is on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation by their human resources department.
