KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Drivers once again had a close call with falling rocks along Chapman Highway.

The first rocks fell Friday damaging several cars near the Ye Old Steakhouse.

The heavy rain during the Monday morning commute loosened the ground and sent another large rock falling and landing very close to traffic.

"Friday it was discovered that a small basketball sized rock had fallen into the roadway and apparently damaged a few vehicles and was removed," said TDOT Spokesperson Mark Nagi.

This time there was no damage to vehicles, but TDOT still takes the issue very seriously. Geotechnical engineers have been onsite working to stabilize the hillside.

"They've been able to remove some of the loose rock which has been in that area," said Nagi.

Rock slides are fairly common at this time of year. Officials say the landscape of East Tennessee combined with the weather makes them almost unavoidable.

"If you are driving in these areas, it's always a possibility when you have the weather we're having, with the freezing and thawing and precipitation getting into some of these rock areas, and this is when the possibility for rock slides occurs," said Nagi.

With several more rounds of rain in the forecast later this week, TDOT officials encourage drivers to use extreme caution in these areas prone to rock slides.

Engineers are expected to be out on Chapman Highway Thursday to remove some of the larger rocks. Lane closures will be possible weather permitting.

If you spot a rock slide or any area of concern you are encouraged to report it to TDOT by calling (865) 594-2400.
