Here is the full press release from Abingdon, VA Chief of Police Tony Sullivan.

On Saturday, 02/01/2014, at 0918 hours, Abingdon Police responded to the 900 block of Hillman Highway in reference to an assault that had just occurred.  Officers were advised that the alleged assailant had left the scene in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction of travel.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Tina L. White, 41 YOA, visibly injured and complaining of pain. The Washington County Life Saving Crew responded to treat the victim.  Officers were able to discern that Ms. White was walking from Hillman Highway when she heard a car pull up beside her. She immediately recognized Jonathan Hess in the vehicle, due to previous encounters with Hess.   According to Ms. White, Hess opened the car door and said "Hey can I talk to you?" White responded with "I don't think I have anything to say to you" as she continued to walk away.

At this point Ms. White said that Mr. Hess tackled her "like a football player."  White stated that he then was on top of her and hit her in the face several times.  After striking her several times, Hess placed both of his hands on her neck and stated "You ******* ***** I will kill you." Ms. White stated that she started seeing spots and then blacked out.  Ms. White stated the next thing she remembers was feeling a sharp pain in her ribs. As she regained consciousness, she realized Hess kicked her in the side. Mr. Hess then stomped on her right ankle, and then stepped over her to flee the scene.

Ms. White was later transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.

Based upon the statement provided by Ms. White, as well as physical evidence obtained at the scene, officers were able to identify the assailant as Jonathan O’Neil Hess, W/M, 24 YOA.

Officers obtained warrants charging Hess with Attempted First Degree Murder.  The warrants were relayed to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office who took Hess in to custody on later that afternoon.  Hess was held without bond in the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon.
