KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A driver only had a bump on the head after being hit by a train Friday morning in North Knoxville.

Dispatchers say the wreck happened around 7:19 a.m. on Buchanan Avenue near McKinley Street.

Officials on scene say a Norfolk-Southern train was traveling north approaching the intersection when the engineer noticed a Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by Ricky Frickes, 30, slowing down at the train crossing.

Officials say at the last minute, Frickes tried to beat the train by speeding up.

The train hit the car in the rear, causing it to spin around before coming to a stop.

Authorities say Frickes had a bump on the head but was up walking following the wreck. He was transported to the hospital for observation.

No charges have been filed at this time.
