TAZEWELL (WATE) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has declared a Tennessee licensed truck driver and his Claiborne County based company to be imminent hazards to public safety and has ordered both to immediately cease operations.

Ricky L. Hatfield, 41, was served the federal orders on January 22. They apply to all vehicles owned or operated by his company Hatfield Trucking.

Federal officials say Hatfield was responsible for a hit and run accident in November on Interstate 81 in Franklin County, Penn. They say he crossed onto the highway shoulder, collided with a car, and struck two pedestrians.

Hatfield fled the scene but was later arrested hiding behind a nearby building. He was charged with multiple offenses.

Officials say he was also convicted of driving under the influence in Utah in 2009. Hatfield attempted the flee the scene of that incident as well.

Hatfield is currently in the custody of Franklin County law enforcement.
