KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The push to add a middle school to a growing West Knox County community got a boost Monday evening.

Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett spoke at the meeting held by the parent group Hardin Valley Supports a Middle School.

The group says the community continues to grow, and they need a school to accommodate the new students.

Burchett agrees, even if it ultimately isn't his decision.

"Absolutely, we need one. This area is so successful and folks want to live here. They want to live here and I don't blame them. I grew up in West Knoxville, so it's something that's going to be needed in the future, but it's going to be the superintendent and the school board that are going to make that initial decision."

Burchett spoke to the group about the procedure. It would be up to County Commission to decide how to fund the project, should it be approved by the Board of Education.
