KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre gave his annual State of the Schools address Monday evening.

McIntyre has come under fire in recent months by some teachers who say he's not allowing educators enough freedom and trust in the classrooms to effectively do their jobs.

McIntyre says they have listened to those concerns.

"We've committed to providing our educators with enhanced choice in implementation of educational initiatives. For example in evaluation and informative assessment, and greater voice in instructional decision making. We also need to make sure our teachers have reasonable autonomy to exercise their professional judgement in the classroom."

McIntyre also noted that he's leaning towards extending the school year through a balanced calendar approach.

"I'm persuaded that having a couple of weeks for real time intervention and enrichment after every nine weeks of instruction would be beneficial for our students."

This was the third year the address has been held.
