Red Cross of East Tenn. on standby as winter weather moves in

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Volunteers with the American Red Cross of East Tennessee Region are ready to respond as heavy snow starts to fall across the area.

The Red Cross says shelter teams and mass care volunteers are standing by, ready to open shelters if the need arises.

"Right now the major concern is large scale power outages," said Regional Chapter Executive Michelle Hankes. "We're already seeing several thousands of people without electricity in the Southeast. That means people aren't able to stay warm and prepare meals. We'll continue to communicate with our EMA partners to determine what the Red Cross can do to help people in need."

The Red Cross urges people to be prepared to stay in their homes for several days. This includes having a supply of water, non-perishable foods, flashlights, batteries, blankets, a first aid kit and medication.

More tips can be found on the Red Cross website.
