KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The National Weather Service in Morristown says 5.8 inches of snow were recorded at McGhee Tyson Airport Wednesday night into Thursday morning, which is the highest amount in 21 years.

The highest snowfall amount ever recorded at the airport was 11.1 inches on March 13, 1993 during the blizzard of that year.

The closest since then was five inches during a snowstorm in 1996.

The snow caused virtually all school systems in East Tennessee to call off classes for Thursday, including the University of Tennessee.

The snow also caused a multitude of driving hazards and other business and event cancellations.
