A witness told 6 News she woke up to the sound of someone crying for help and called 911.

Officials say 31-year-old Katie Nichols stabbed her mother at least three times with a pair of scissors and two kitchen knives.

The victim was taken to UT Medical Center where she underwent surgery and is now in the intensive care unit.

Detectives say neighbors called the sheriff's office Tuesday afternoon to report the suspect was outside the apartment where the stabbing occurred.

Deputies took Katie Nichols into custody without incident.
