KNOXVILLE (WATE) - UT students are helping Walmart decide what to carry in their new location near campus, scheduled to open in time for the new school year. University Commons is under construction near Cumberland Ave. and Volunteer Blvd. with anchor stores Walmart and Publix in addition to smaller retail shops.

"They wanted to know about how much space we have in the dorm rooms. They wanted to know how much space we have in the on-campus apartments," said Devan Page, a junior retail and consumer sciences major and one of just a handful of students picked to work closely with the opening of Walmart's new campus location.

The small group even traveled to Walmart headquarters in Arkansas in October. Professor Ann Fairhurst says the partnership is a win for everyone.

"It's one of a very few campus locations and so they're going to use this as a prototype," she said.

For their part, Walmart leaders say they are learning a lot about student shopping habits.

"They've talked a lot about healthy things, activities outside, and of course electronics. We've had a lot of conversations about what electronics we're going to carry," said Boyce Smith.
