All 23 students out of hospitals after Sullivan County bus crash

Posted: Updated:

Two Sullivan County school buses -- both carrying students from Ketron Elementary School -- crashed on Bloomingdale Road in front of the Bloomingdale Water Department Thursday.

Leslie Earhart, Sullivan County public information officer, confirmed just after the crash that county bus No. 333 rear-ended bus No. 326 along Bloomingdale Road next to the water department.

Seventy students combined were on the buses and around 23 had minor, non-life threatening injuries following the crash.

"One of the children onboard pulled the emergency latch on a window. At that point,  an alarm sounded which startled the bus driver and, of course, he looked back to see what was going on. At that moment, the bus in front of him began to stop and ended up rear ending the bus in front," said Earhart.

Earhart added the driver will not be charged.

Parents, as well as ambulances from various counties, responded to the scene. Hawkins and Washington counties are also reportedly at the scene of the crash.

"We were just stopping at our normal bus stop and the next thing we know we're getting rear ended," said Kelsey Falin, a student at Ketron, "We banged our heads on the back of the seats."

Injured students were taken to both Holston Valley Medical Center and Indian Path Medical Center after the crash, where News Channel 11 later reported that 14 students were being treated at HVMC and 9 students were being treated at IPMC.

Both hospitals reported all students had been discharged as of 9:00 p.m.

News Channel 11 crews will be following up on this story as more information becomes available. Keep checking for updates.
