KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville police have found a 4-month-old baby and vehicle that were stolen from a gas station Friday morning.

Dispatch says a suspect stole the 2004 black Dodge Neon with the baby inside around 6:30 a.m. at the Weigel's located on the 1700 block of Merchants Drive.

Police say the mother went inside the store and left the vehicle running with the child in an infant seat inside.

While the mother was in the store, what appeared to be a white 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier pulled into the parking lot. A male passenger got out, walked to the running Neon, got in and took off.

A citizen called 911 around 8 a.m. to report the car and baby were in the parking lot of the McDonald's on Hardin Valley Road.

The child was unharmed, but was taken to Children's Hospital as a precaution. The infant was later released from the hospital and reunited with his mother.

The Department of Children's Services is also investigating. Police say the mother could face child neglect or endangerment charges, but that is up to the district attorney.

The Knoxville Police Department says the suspect is a white man with a scraggly beard. He stands about 6 feet tall and was wearing a gray or green hoodie and blue jeans. Police have released surveillance photos believed to show the suspect and the vehicle.

A search for him is currently underway. Anyone with information is asked to call KPD at (865) 215-7212.

KPD says there's no reason to believe the mother of the baby and the suspect knew each other.
