DANDRIDGE (WATE) - A truck carrying chickens overturned on Interstate 40 westbound Monday morning, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says it happened around 7 a.m. at mile marker 419 in Jefferson County.

THP says the truck driven by Daniel Morrisett, 56, drifted off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Morrisett was taken to UT Medical Center.

Most of the chickens did not survive the crash.

Troopers say Morrisett was not wearing a seat belt. He was cited for violation of the seat belt law and for driving with expired insurance.

TDOT says the crash should be cleared by 1 p.m.

Westbound traffic is affected with the right lane blocked. Eastbound traffic is not affected.
