Red Cross offers classes on choking rescue

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - After being unable to properly perform the Heimlich maneuver earlier this month at a dinner with the ETSU athletic director, former UT Coach Phillip Fulmer had been scheduled to attend a class on  the procedure on Monday, but had to cancel due to a family emergency.

Fulmer was having dinner with the ETSU athletic director on February 6 at a Cheddar's restaurant in Johnson City when Dr. Richard Sander started choking on a piece of steak.

He says Fulmer sprang into action trying to do the Heimlich maneuver, but his efforts failed.

So, a nurse practitioner, who was also at the restaurant, jumped in and saved Sander.

6 News was at the office of the American Red Cross Monday to get tips on how to properly perform the Heimlich maneuver.

The Red Cross offers classes weekly. To find a class near you, click here.
