KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Young Williams Animal Center is celebrating World Spay Day with a special spay and neuter event.

"Op Around the Clock" is 24 hours of surgeries for female and male cats.

Young Williams Animal Village on Kingston Pike set a goal to spay or neuter at least 100 cats by the time the day is over, but they hope the awareness the event raises will bring in many more.

This is not Ashley Greene's first trip to Young Williams. She's brought several other pets to be spayed or neutered in the past. This time it's her 6-month-old kittens Molly and Miley's turn.

"We take in a lot of strays and feed them and it's just so important that there aren't any more out on the streets," said Greene. "We see so many that are left out on their own and it's sad."

Dr. Lisa Chassy with Young Williams hopes others will follow Ashley's lead.

She says this is the beginning of breeding season for cats, a crucial time for controlling the population.

"We get hit with as many as 500 or 600 cats in the middle of summer," said Dr. Chassy. "So if we can spay or neuter them now that's going to lower the number we take in this spring."

To help that happen they opened their spay and neuter clinic for 24 hours straight. The cost is only $45.

"If you are a pet owner you should, because there are so many strays running around that are already without and these places are overflowing and already have so many that need to be adopted so I think it's important to prevent that," said Greene.

"The fewer cats we have come into the shelter the greater chances they have at getting adopted," added Dr. Chassy.

Young Williams Animal Village provides spay or neuter services Monday through Friday at the 6400 Kingston Pike location.
