KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A man suffered second and third degree burns Tuesday in a Knoxville apartment fire.

According to the Knoxville Fire Department, the fire broke out at Briarcliff Apartments in West Knoxville around 7:30 p.m.

Officials say the victim was taken to UT Medical Center with burns to his upper torso and severe smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one unit, some nearby units suffered smoke and minimal water damage.

Firefighters say 24 tenants were temporarily displaced until it could be determined safe for them to re-enter the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
