KNOXVILLE (WATE) – An online petition is asking people whether they would like to see Bruce Pearl return as head coach for UT basketball.

There are more than 27,000 signatures on the petition, which says its purpose is not to promote the firing of Coach Cuonzo Martin.

Rather, the goal is to promote the idea that Bruce Pearl should be rehired if the position opens up at the end of the season.

The petition goes on to list Pearl's achievements.

"Well I think people make mistakes and we made a mistake," said Chrystal Norris. "It's no reason to keep him out I think he deserves another chance."

Mike Murdaugh disagreed. "I think it's a big mistake because wherever Bruce Pearl ends up he's going to be under a microscope by the NCAA and I think he's done an awful lot of damage to the program as it is."

The goal of the petition is to get 50,000 signatures.
