KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A new barbecue place in East Knox County scored the lowest health inspection grade of the week.

Personal hygiene, food temperatures, and where chemicals are stored, are familiar violations at low scoring restaurants and we saw those problems this week.

Clanton's Barbecue, 4507 E. John Sevier Highway - Grade: 71

That is a passing grade.

The temperature of potato salad was off. It was too warm. The correct cool temperature is 41 and below to slow the growth of bacteria.

The manager might have known the temperature in the cooler was too warm had there been a thermometer. The inspector writes there was no thermometer in the walk-in cooler as health rules require.

In the kitchen, the inspector found an open employee drink cup. Open cups are not allowed because the liquid could possibly spill onto food. Employees can sip a drink in the kitchen, but there is supposed to be a top on the cup and a straw to sip the drink.

Another problem was a bag of medication had been laid on a shelf along side food. Medication is required to be left in a cabinet or in someone's purse, not out in the open, especially near food.

Top scores of the week

  • TK Cafe, 10415 Parkside Drive - Grade: 100
  • Lunch Box, 2250 Sutherland Avenue - Grade: 96
  • Little Caesars, 442 Cedar Bluff Road - Grade: 94
  • Safari Grill, Knoxville Zoo - Grade: 93
  • Zeke's Grill, 1604 6th Avenue - Grade: 93
  • Penn Station, 4909 North Broadway - Grade: 92
  • Sonic Drive-In, 3307 North Broadway - Grade: 91
  • Lulu's Tea Room, 3703 West Beaver Creek Drive - Grade: 90

Health inspection reports are supposed to be posted in restaurants in a location where can you read them.
