Trooper nearly killed in I-40 crash recovering from surgery

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. (WATE) - The Tennessee State Trooper who was nearly killed when a trucker hit his patrol car on I-40 in 2012 is now recovering from yet another surgery.

Sergeant Lowell Russell's car caught fire in that crash. He suffered a fractured neck and spine as well as other injuries.

Russell underwent an operation at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, California on Friday.

Several hours later, 6 News received word that the operation was a success.
