KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A lot of viewers have asked Streetwise about a stretch of highly used state highway in North Knox County.

State Highway 33, also known as Maynardville Highway, is a major artery between Knox and Union counties.

One viewer asked: "What's with all the barrels lining 33? That road is in need of repair. Is this a sign that improvements are coming?"

The answer to that question is yes. TDOT says the barrels are out in preparation for an upcoming widening project. It will also include the reconstruction of the existing two-lane and four-lane sections to a five-lane stretch of highway.

The project will also include curb and gutter work and the installation of five foot sidewalks in areas.

The project will cover Maynardville Highway from just north of Emory Road, all the way to the Union County line, or just over six miles of road.

The total cost of the project is just under $30 million. Completion date is set for May 2016.
