Sevierville officials warn of utility scam

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - The Sevierville Police Department is warning residents and businesses about a utility scam.

The Sevier County Electric System says several customers reported receiving phone calls by a person claiming to represent SCES.

The person informed customers their electric service would be disconnected unless they provided credit card information.

Sevier County Utility District customers have reported a similar scam, except they were contacted via email and asked for credit card information or a check to be mailed.

Neither SCES or SCUD requests this type of information. Police say never provide credit card or other personal information over the phone, online or in any manner unless they have verified they are speaking with a legitimate company or service.

Foradditional information, SCES customers may contact Stanley Stiles at(865) 453-2887 and SCUD customers may call (865) 453-3272.
