Murder suicide under investigation in McMinn County

RICEVILLE (WATE) - The McMinn County Sheriff's Office is investigating what's believed to be a murder suicide that happened late Tuesday.

Sheriff Joe Guy says 911 dispatchers received a call from a home on County Road 754 simply saying "murder suicide." When dispatchers tried to call back, there was either no answer or a busy signal.

Deputies went to the address and made contact with Catherine Dickson, 67, who said she had just gotten out of the shower and could night find her husband, Kenneth Dickson, 65.

She also said her husband's aunt, Helena Spect, 85, was asleep in a bedroom.

Deputies found Spect dead in a bed deceased from apparent asphyxiation. Kenneth Dickson was found dead outside the back of the home from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Both bodies were sent to UT Medical Center for autopsies.

Sheriff Guy says evidence, including notes apparently left by Mr. Dickson, a strained relationship between him and his aunt, and the initial 911 call point toward a murder suicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
