Murfreesboro, TENN. (WATE) - Freshman KeKe McKinney scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Fulton Falcons won their opening game of the Class AA state basketball tournament at MTSU on Thursday.
Fulton jumped to a 5-0 lead on jump shots by Quay Hines and McKinney, but Cannon County ran-off 6 consecutive points to take a 6-5 lead.
With the game tied 6-6, Brittani Whiteside made it 8-6 Fulton and the Falcons never relinquished the lead.
"I really think we were focused from the outset and that's what we said," said Fulton head coach John Fisher. "We're going to focus on the small things. I know we're on the big stage but the small things are what makes a difference."
Taynna Castle scored 16 points for Fulton while Moneisha Thomas added 12.
"It's an honor and I am very excited because I am a freshman and I want to win my freshman year and for us to be our first time and me being a freshman, that's a big deal, " McKinney said after the game.
Fulton plays Creek Wood in the state semifinals on Friday night.
