Great Smoky Mountains National Park getting ready for spring season

GATLINBURG (WATE) - With spring fast approaching, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is getting ready for the upcoming season. Visitors are looking forward to different parts of the parks opening.

Park officials are opening up several of the secondary roads and campgrounds just in time for the nice weather this weekend. A lot of people are already in town hitting those trails.

Temperatures are nearing the 60s this weekend, and spring quickly approaching means people from all over are flocking to the Smokies just in time for spring opening.

The park has secondary roads and campgrounds on a staggered opening schedule starting Friday.

Families from different places are making their way into town, many of them trying to escape colder states and enjoy these spring-like temperatures.

Park officials say they will continue the staggered opening of all the roads and campgrounds throughout the park over the next couple months

Road openings:

  • Forge Creek Road - March 7
  • Clingmans Dome Road - April 1
  • Round Bottom/Straight Fork Road - April 4
  • Parson Branch, Rich Mountain Road, Roaring Fork Nature Trail and Little Greenbrier - April 11
  • Heintooga Ridge and Balsam Mountain roads - May 23
  • Cades Cove Loop Road will be closed to bicycle use only on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 10 a.m. from May 7 through Sept. 24

Visitor centers and offices (hours will be extended as the season progresses):

  • Sugarlands Visitor Center - Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Cades Cove Visitor Center - Open 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Oconaluftee Visitor Center - Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Clingmans Dome Visitor Contact Station opens April 1
  • Backcountry Office open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


  • Cades Cove - Open year round, group sites open March 14
  • Elkmont - March 14, group sites open April 25
  • Anthony Creek - April 1
  • Cosby - April 11, group sites open April 11
  • Abrams Creek - May 23
  • Look Rock - To be determined
