KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Good Samaritans from all over East Tennessee registered to become bone marrow donors Saturday.

The registration drive was organized by friends, family and teachers of Chloe Blair, a first-grader who has cancer.

Chloe was 6 when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a kind of blood cancer. She was successfully treated and went into remission, but last month the leukemia returned and her battle begins again.

Doctors say Chloe's condition could be helped by a bone marrow transplant. One of the donor drive's organizers is also a teacher at Chloe's school. Christine Gammon says she wants to help Chloe, but knows new donors are needed by patients all over the country.

An estimated 12,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed every year with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia, and  their best or only hope of a cure could be a transplant from an unrelated marrow donor.

Saturday's drive was held in partnership with the Cooperative Appalachian Marrow Program (CAMP), which also partners with the national bone marrow donor registry, Be The Match. If you would like to become a marrow donor, visit CAMP's Facebook page or Be The Match's website

You may also contact Linda Hilton, CAMP's Donor Center Coordinator, at 423-302-3679 or 1-866-680-0137.
