Record number of Tennesseans filing taxes online


NASHVILLE (WATE) -With five weeks left before the April 15 tax filing deadline, the InternalRevenue Service reports that Tennesseans are filing their tax returns online in recordnumbers. 

The IRS has received nearly 1,469,000 electronic returns from Tennesseans as of March 7. That's 3.8 percent more than last year. The number of Tennesseans doing their own taxes, rather than using a preparation service, has grown even more. Nearly712,000 Tennessee filers have e-filed self-prepared returns. That's 9.8percent over last year at the same time. 

Filers withhousehold income of $58,000 or less can use brand-name tax software free at through the IRS Free File program. Allfilers can use the free Fillable Forms option.

Taxpayers whoneed help filing and whose household income was less than $52,000 or who areage 60 or older can visit one of 140 free tax help sites in 44 Tennesseecounties. The help sites are staffed by IRS-certified volunteers who willprepare and e-file tax returns free. Call 1-800-906-9887 for site hours andlocations.
