LOUISVILLE (WATE) - Five families were displaced Monday afternoon by a large fire at an apartment complex in Louisville.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon at 1130 Law Road around 4:30 p.m. Crews reported one apartment was fully involved when they arrived, with thick smoke coming from the building.

"My neighbor was over at my house. She went over to her house to get something and she started screaming," said resident Sondra Rogers. "I went outside, and when I walked outside, the kitchen window busted and the flames started coming out of the window."

The Blount County Sheriff's Office says no one has been injured in the fire but they worked throughout the evening checking for hot spots. Six units were damaged.

Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan says they believe the fire started in the bottom unit. He said they worked hard to contain it by hauling in water.

"We brought a tremendous amount of water in our tanker trucks," said Chief McClanahan. He said that is standard for their area but said no fire is easy. One firefighter twisted his ankle but the chief said he's doing just fine.

For Rogers and the rest of the residents are thankful for the first responders. Rogers says right now she's just trying to cope with what happened.

"I've been here about six months and everything I worked for is gone," said Rogers. "I mean my kids are good, my kids are fine and that's what's important, its all stuff, Ill replace it."

Five families were living in the building. The Red Cross is assisting with food, clothing and shelter.

Chief McClanahan says a cause is undetermined but they do not believe it is suspicious. As protocol it will be turned over to the Blount County Sheriff's Department for investigation.
