30 dogs euthanized at Oak Ridge Animal Shelter

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter was forced to euthanize roughly 30 dogs after a distemper outbreak.

Oak Ridge Police say a puppy that was adopted became sick and was brought back. Tests revealed the animal had distemper.

Other dogs at the shelter were showing symptoms and the majority tested positive for the disease. Officers say that's when 28 to 30 dogs had to be put down over the weekend.

Shelter workers are now sanitizing the facility as best they can. They hope to reopen the shelter on Thursday.

If you recently adopted a dog from the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter and it's showing signs of distemper, you're asked to contact the shelter immediately.
