KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Two people were brought to the hospital early Wednesday morning after a house fire and explosion in South Knoxville.

Rural/Metro firefighters say it happened around 1:40 a.m. in the 6800 block of Ottinger Drive.

The home was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene.

Four people and a dog were inside the home at the time.

"We come out and tried to put water on it, and it wouldn't work, so we got everybody out and come out and watched it go up in smoke," said homeowner Maryanne McClanahan.

Maryanne's husband Darrell was burned when the fire spread to the back porch, causing a propane tank on a grill to explode.

His step-daughter Heather McClanahan was standing by watching as it happened.

"Dad went around I guess to try and put it out and that's when the propane tank exploded and it threw him from the deck out into the yard a good 15 feet,"  said Heather.

Heather was also transported to the hospital for a panic attack and minor smoke inhalation. She has since been released.

Heather credits her father for getting the family out in time.

"We feel extremely blessed and thankful that everybody was able to get out alive," said Heather.

Despite the loss, the McClanahan's are maintaining hope.

"We'll get things back. It will take a little time. We have good neighbors. Their willing to help. We will get back," said Maryanne.

Darrell McClanahan is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days for observation, but is expected to be okay.
