2 well-known attorneys charged with extortion

NASHVILLE(AP) - Two well-known Middle Tennessee attorneys have been charged with extortion for allegedly having a client arrested after pressuring her for more money in legal fees.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says Clarksville attorneys Fletcher Long and Carrie Gasaway were each charged with one count of extortion after a two-year investigation and both surrendered to authorities.

Gasaway is married to Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge John H. Gasaway. Long has represented clients in several high-profile criminal cases, including a former Vanderbilt football player accused in a gang rape in a dorm on campus.

Long told The Associated Press that he will be vindicated. He said he and Gasaway are no longer in the same firm.

A phone message left for Carrie Gasaway was not immediately returned.
