Volunteers needed for season at Gray Fossil Site

Posted: Updated:

JOHNSON CITY (AP) - Paleontologists from East Tennessee State University and the General Shale Natural History Museum are looking for volunteers to assist during the 2014 field season at the Gray Fossil Site.

An orientation for anyone interested in volunteering will be held Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m. at the museum.

Museum Director Blaine Schubert says volunteers will have the opportunity to assist with excavations on the Gray Fossil Site.

Participants will be required to complete a training program in the preparation lab at the museum before being permitted to dig to ensure consistency in methods. Volunteers will also be involved with wet screening, which is a process paleontologists use to search for microfossils. Wet screening requires the ability to lift bags of sediment, which weigh about 50 pounds.
