KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The East Tennessee Region of the American Red Cross has named former University of Tennessee head football coach Philip Fulmer as its community resiliency spokesperson.

In this new role, Fulmer will "advocate for emergency planning, disaster response, and training for life saving skills," according to a news release from the Red Cross.

Fulmer recently learned the importance of first aid training when he was unable to help a friend who was choking.

"You can't punt when it comes to saving someone's life," said Fulmer. "I've witnessed first-hand how important it is to know what to do. That's why my entire family and I are taking Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid classes in the coming weeks and why I'm committing to make sure more people take an active role in the safety of their own friends and family."

The American Red Cross offers similar classes every week at several locations across East Tennessee.
