KNOXVILLE (WATE) - An organization of mothers who have lost their children to war rallied support for a special project at a Knox County Commission meeting on Monday.

The Gold Star moms are working on legislation to rename State Route 1 "Gold Star Families Memorial Highway."

Commissioner Richard Briggs is sponsoring the resolution.

Gold Star mom Sherrie McGhee talked about the significance of renaming the highway at the meeting.

"This state has spent more men and women into battle to defend our nation's freedoms and in doing so our state has many fallen heroes and therefore Gold Star families. It is only fitting to name a state route that starts from one end of the state and goes to the other."

The resolution passed unanimously at Monday's meeting.

State Route 1 passes through 23 counties, including Knox.
