KNOXVILLE (WATE) - There's a new petition out in support of the University of Tennessee men's basketball head coach Cuonzo Martin.

It's aimed at extending his contract, and giving him a raise.

This comes just weeks after a previous petition to replace Martin with former coach Bruce Pearl got more than 36,000 signatures.

But now that Pearl signed on to coach Auburn University, and the Vols are headed to the Sweet 16, fans say they want Martin to stay.

Martin has averaged more than 20 wins a season, but he's one of the lowest paid coaches in the SEC. He has just one year remaining on his contract.

The online petition to extend Martin's contract, and give him a raise, started Sunday and had nearly 200 signatures as of Monday night.

On the ipetitions.com site, Vols fan Joshua Hill writes, "Cuonzo does it the right way, the hard way, the character way. Class act. PAY THE MAN."

Amy Trice writes, "Give that man a raise! Thanks, Coach! We love you!"

UT student Cole Murley says after last night's 83 to 63 win over Mercer University, he supports the petition.

"I think the win came at a great time, and kind of got the heat off Cuonzo. I think once Bruce went to Auburn, I think Cuonzo's our longtime guy," Murley said.

Monday night at Calhoun's on the River, fans got a chance to meet UT forward Jarnell Stokes. Because of players like Stokes, Vols fan Kathy Loy says Martin is doing a good job on, and off the court.

"His players are staying out of trouble, they're not getting into any trouble. They're fine, upstanding students. I think that there's not enough of that in the NCAA," Loy said.

"He's alright, keep him here. Just like Butch, let him build something," Vols fan Bill McMorkle said.

Some of the fans who signed the petition to oust Martin have now apologized in an open letter to the coach.

Another online petition started on Sunday is trying to keep Stokes playing at UT for his senior year.
