MADISONVILLE (WATE) - A car crashed into the Checkered Flag Market and Deli on Highway 411 in Madisonville Tuesday morning, sending a woman to the hospital.

Police say a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by Willard Lambert, 82, struck the front door entrance, coming to rest inside the building. Darlene Arwood, 64, was inside and was struck.

"It scared me to death," said store clerk Abigail Atkins. "I couldn't do nothing but run."

Atkins has worked as a cashier at the store for almost 11 years and says she's never seen anything like it.

"Just on TV I've seen it, but I never thought I would ever have to live through it," said Atkins.

Atkins said Lambert is a regular customer of the store.

"He says the gas got stuck," said Atkins. "I don't know what happened. He's in here every day."

Arwood was flown by LifeStar to UT Medical Center.

"She was bleeding a lot in her face and in her ears," said Atkins. "She didn't lose consciousness."

Workers spent the rest of the morning cleaning up the damage left behind, thankful the crash didn't happen a few minutes earlier when the store was filled with students heading to a nearby school.

"There were still some kids in here," said Atkins. "In fact, the guy that I was waiting on his daughter was right beside him and he knocked her out of the way. And then she said she knocked two other little girls out of the way."

A crew is replacing the door and hopes to reopen Tuesday afternoon.

No charges have been filed.
