Boomsday, Vols opening game may switch days this year

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville tourism officials say they may switch things up for Labor Day weekend this year, moving the Vols opening day football game to Sunday, August 31, and Boomsday to Saturday, August 30.

Visit Knoxville President Kim Bumpas told 6 News they have had conversations with the University of Tennessee about switching the dates for the two events.

Bumpas added, however, that Visit Knoxville has nothing official to announce at this time.

UT Senior Associate Athletics Director Jimmy Stanton issued a statement to 6 News saying: "We have had discussions with the appropriate parties about this but have nothing to report at this time."

The events switched days previously in 2004 to accommodate a gameday telecast on ESPN.

Knoxville's annual Boomsday celebration is touted as the largest Labor Day fireworks show in the nation. Officials previously announced premium seating would be made available for the first time this year.

The Vols are set to take on Utah State in their season opener this year at Neyland Stadium.
