KNOXVILLE (WATE) - After four years, the Big Ears Festival is back in downtown Knoxville this weekend.

The music festival started in 2009, but stopped after 2010 partly due to scheduling conflicts.

About 2,000 people braved the rain Saturday to watch performances throughout downtown, including some at the Tennessee Theater, the Bijou Theater, the Knoxville Museum of Art and Scruffy City Hall.

DJ Young says he's glad to finally have the festival back.

"I feel like it's a reasonable price for a whole weekend ticket and what you're going to see and the quality of musicians," Young said.

Rachel Grimes came from Louisville to attend. She's a pianist performing at the festival Sunday, but on Saturday she says she's just a music fan, appreciating the variety of artists.

"I grew up listening to all kinds of music, and playing all kinds of music so it's just up my alley. I think that may be true for a lot of people, especially the last 40 years or so, who are just used to listening to everything," Grimes said.

"It truly is an amazing festival where artists get to collaborate in ways they maybe don't at other events," said organizer Jeff Cuellar.

Cuellar says it's about more than the music.

"This is a great way for Knoxville to showcase what an amazing city it is and where we've come in the downtown revitalization. It's a great opportunity to showcase the southern hospitality that we all know and love here," Cuellar said.

"It's very, very unique, very special what they're doing. I think in coming years it's going to get bigger and bigger," Grimes said.

Grimes says thanks to the huge fan response, they're trying to make it an annual event.

The same group that produces the Bonnaroo music festival, AC Entertainment, also produces the Big Ears Festival.
