Report: Cuonzo Martin turns down Marquette

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Tennessee basketball head coach Cuonzo Martin has removed his name from consideration for the same position at Marquette, according to multiple reports Tuesday morning.

Martin reportedly met with Marquette officials on Sunday to talk about their opening.

The Tennessee coach is fresh of a run to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament but had faced harsh criticism toward the end of the season from a portion of the fan base. Some fans even started an online petition to bring back former coach Bruce Pearl.

Martin, who just finished the third year of a five year deal at Tennessee, was given a $50,000 raise on his $1.3 million annual salary at the end of last season, but he was not given a contract extension. The penalty if he were to take a similar job at another university fell on Tuesday from $2.6 million to $1.3 million.
