HUNTSVILLE (WATE) - An East Tennessee high school band needs your help. The band at Scott High School in Scott County is growing, but there aren't enough instruments to keep up.

The Scott High School band is few in numbers, but big in spirit.

"We have an 80 percent or more free and reduced lunch, so the students here are economically struggling, and so this is a way for them to continue enjoying school, enjoying music," said band director Jessica Whitson.

There aren't many members now, but interest in band at the high school is growing.

"We will double in size next year and we will triple in size the year after that," said Whitson.

Administrators say they expect the band to continue growing exponentially because the middle school feeder schools have been increasing their numbers of band members. If all those students come to Scott High, there will be a serious instrument shortage.

"We're in an area that while our parents and community members give all that they can, sometimes it still falls short," said Principal Melissa Rector.

They're asking for your help. If you happen to have an old instrument lying around collecting dust, the Scott High School band can put it to use.

"We really need flutes, clarinets, trumpets, the like," said Whitson.

The goal is to save the music. The benefits are countless, administrators say.

"It's something we want them to continue to do because we know that if they continue to improve and advance their studies in the area of music, that they're also going to reap the benefits of that in math, science, social studies and even English," said Rector.

If you have an instrument to donate or want to donate money to the cause, you can take it straight to Scott High School, 400 Scott High Drive in Huntsville, or to Lunsford's Musical Instruments, 3606 Western Avenue in Knoxville.
