A man is in custody following a deadly shooting early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex in Murfreesboro.
Witnesses told police they heard arguing and gunshots around 5 a.m. outside the Stonewood Apartments on East Clark Boulevard not far from the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
Responding officers found Christopher Turley lying on the pavement. Turley, 23, lived at the apartment complex with his mother. He died at the scene.
A gun believed to have been used in the shooting was found nearby.
Anthony Smith, 22, of Christiana, was arrested and charged with first degree murder.
Family members told News 2 her son had been friends with Smith for years prior to the shooting.
"They have always been friends. I think they were just hanging out and I guess they got into a fight. A fight is one thing, but don't take my son's life," mother Pamela Dennis said.
Smith was booked in the Rutherford County jail on $500,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 24.
"I never would have pictured him to do something like that. I'm shocked," Turley's sister Brittany Stacey said.
A motive was not immediately released.
"He [doesn't] deserve to die. He [doesn't] deserve to lose his life at such a young age, and I don't deserve to lose my son, my child," Dennis said. "I don't have a clue how I am going to go on in life. I just don't know."
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to call Murfreesboro police at 615-893-2717 or Rutherford County Crime Stoppers at 615-893-STOP (7867).
