Knoxville K-9 officer Nathanael Skellenger injured in crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville Police Department K-9 officer Nathanael Skellenger, 28, was injured Wednesday afternoon when he apparently suffered a medical problem and crashed on Interstate 640.

Skellenger was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment but was released overnight. He is not scheduled to return to work on Thursday but KPD reports he will resume work on his normal rotation.

KPD says that Skellenger was heading westbound just east of the Millertown Pike exit around 2:07 p.m. when he lost control of his cruiser.

The vehicle traveled across three lanes of traffic and ended up in the median.

Skellenger's K9, Ammo, was not injured.

Skellenger, who has been with KPD since 2009, had just finished his shift and was heading home at the time.
