Tennessee Senate passes bill allowing high-gravity beer sales

Posted:

A bill allowing grocery stores to sell high-gravity craft beer passed the Tennessee Senate on Thursday.

High-gravity beer is a traditional form of beer making in Europe but hasn't been largely available in the United States. The higher-alcohol beers tend to be more expensive due to the larger amounts of grains or malt used and are often intended to be sipped or savored like wine. Most wines fall in the range of 12-15 percent.

Currently grocery stores are only allowed to sell beer with an alcohol content of 5 percent by weight. The bill passed by the Senate raises the limit to 8 percent.
