Greene County teens arrested in connection with murder could be tried as adults

GREENEVILLE (WATE) - The four teens arrested in connection with a Greene County murder could be tried as adults.

Zachary Blanchard, 16, Shelby Riley, 16, Daniel Birchfield Jr., 15, and Liam Lawler, 15 all appeared in a Tennessee court for the first time on Friday.

Zachary Blanchard is accused of killing his father, Robert Blanchard in Greene County in early April. All four teens were found in Newberry County, South Carolina following a 10-hour manhunt.

Blanchard faces first degree murder charges. Riley, Birchfield, and Lawler are all charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and theft charges.

The DA's office asked for all juveniles to be tried as adults on Friday during a hearing in Greene County court. A judge will determine the outcome of that request at separate hearings scheduled throughout June.

Blanchard was moved to a Knox County correctional facility. The other three teens will remain at the Upper East Tennessee Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Johnson City until their trial dates.
